A while back, I decided it was time to take a trip to Savannah and get a feel for the south. I had read all about it and I had seen specials and travel programs that focused on the area, but I had never seen the place up close. With my mind made up, I threw the bags in the car, activated the Indianapolis security systems and hit the road for a 771 mile drive into the heart of the south.

When I reached Savannah, all I wanted to do was sleep but there would be plenty of time for that later. The first stop was the Historic Savannah Theatre. There is really nothing that quite compares to a live performance and I was most certainly impressed with the caliber of performers that struck across that stage. Next, it was a quick stop at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. I didn’t come to worship, but it did give me a chance to get up close and personal with the oldest Roman Catholic Church in Georgia.

And there were so many other historic places that I saw, but to name and talk about them all would fill an entire book. I highly recommend Savannah for the next time you need a vacation.

Shopping is one of America’s favorite past-times. In today’s economy, we are all looking for those affordable places to receive our much needed retail therapy without the large credit card bills to show for it. I have found some of the best and most affordable stores to shop at in Savannah, for visitors and locals alike.
The first great place to shop for those on a budget is the Savannah Festival Outlet Center. This outlet center offers quality name-brand merchandise at a fraction of the price that you would pay at your local mall. Some stores in this outlet center include Reebok, Van Heusen, Dress Barn/Dress Barn Woman, Kitchen Collection and Osh Kosh B’Gosh. You can easily find something for the whole family at this shopping paradise.
Another great place to find bargains in Savannah is Big Lots. They have several of these stores throughout the city. You can find everything here, including bedding, beauty supplies, toys and home decorative items. When other stores order too much stock, or a product is discontinued, they send it here, leading to bargains up to 50 percent or more off of retail prices.
And last, but not least, there is always the local Savannah Wal-mart. They are known throughout the country for their low prices on everything you can think of, and are a great place to stock up on groceries.

A trip to Savannah is a guaranteed trip into the Deep South and offers a rich history that is often overlooked by many travelers.
The easiest place to experience the nightlife on a budget is exploring the shops, restaurants’ and bars of the River Street area. Located alongside the Savannah River the street is paved with thousands upon thousands of ballast stones that were discarded by sailing ships from its official founding in 1733 until the day the S.S. Savannah left port to become the first steam ship to cross the Atlantic in 1819. The city of Savannah is self-sustaining and does not rely upon tourist dollars to survive. Pricing is driven by the local economy and not artificially inflated. Southern rules of hospitality still apply and it is not considered to be respectable to take advantage of travelers.
There is a strong military presence in Georgia and Savannah is a popular destination for many soldiers and their families as well. The rough and tumble feeling of the area is only enhanced by the presence of The Pirate House as alluded to in the classic novel Treasure Island but the hospitality of the area is genuine and everyone is welcome.Take a look here to learn more: Georgia on my mind
